The Giver is a young-adult novel that has “companion” books that relate to the original story. Each story is set in a future with seemingly idyllic circumstances, but is in reality emotionally crippled and falling apart, requiring the protagonists of the respective books to stand apart and overcome the standards that their societies have set for them.

The challenge was to design cohesive, yet potentially stand-alone covers that hint at the basic content and construct of the books without being overt, blatant, or cliché.

The solution was to take inspiration from Cubism, considering the futuristic visual quality while remembering its distinct place in history—thereby making a connection between the books’ settings and circumstances. Each cover takes a reoccurring theme from its book and distills the message in a subtle way, intending for the reader to return to the design upon finishing the story and finding a clear connection between the two.
